Day Three: The Swim

She was standing by the side of the loch, at dawn, on a summer’s morning. The cool air warming caused a mist to rise like smoke. She had walked the three miles from the village towards her mother’s house, along the main road, and then over a fence and onto the deep path through the woods, new trees, ranked in close rows, at first, over which she could see the dark mass of the mountains, and then into old growth pines, spaced and silent, like sentinels…
