I'd be interested to know whether or not you agree with Gabor Mate. He seems to have a far more humane take on things than this. Firstly, we're not free to have early experiences and they shape later choices. So if we are traumatised and medicate ourselves as a result, that's not a choice. The only choice we have is over whether or not we become aware of what is going on and make conscious the possibility of responding, rather than reacting, in other words of pausing before the first sip, rather than just diving in. This is not pedantry. This is how it works.
